Tough Night for the Hunters, Awadh Win 4-1

Two emphatic wins, a team brimming with confidence and a raucous home support – the stage seemed perfect for another Hunters victory against Awadh Warriors. And yet, as always in sport, history and occasion counts for nothing and you’re only as good as you are on the day – and on 28th Dec 2018 – the Hunters fell short.

Awadh Warriors took control of the tie right from the start as they took the opening game of the night. The trump match for the Hunters – a mixed doubles tie – went the distance as the Hunters mounted a spirited comeback, but Awadh took the match and with that wrested a firm control of the tie!

The player of the season so far has been Mark Caljouw for the Hunters and he produced yet another stirring performance to wipe out the negative the Hunters suffered from the earlier trump. Just as it had happened in both of his last two matches, it went the distance, but Mark held his nerve to win 15-10 7 -15 15-7.

Mark has now won himself almost a cult following amongst the Hunters fan and they went delirious with some of his stunning shot making, affable nature and ability to claw out of tough situations.

With two matches down, and each team having one-each, the Hunters skipper took centre stage against Beiwen Zhang. The tightly fought first game went to the Warriors 15-13 before Zhang wrested the second one comprehensively to take the match and put clear daylight between the Hunters and the warriors.

All was not yet lost for the Hunters, as they had Lee Hyun Il to face Son Wan Ho in the trump match for the Awadh Warriors. Lee has been a picture of calm and the packed Gachibowli stadium was hoping for him to turn around the trump and even out the tie before the final showdown in men’s doubles.

However, this wasn’t quite the night for the Hunters and despite his best efforts Lee went down 10-15 and 11-15 as Son Wan Ho took the trump and with that the tie went to the Awadh Warriors. BodinIsara& Kim Sa Rang got together to win the finally match-up of the evening but it was of little solace to the Hunters faithful. Awadh Warriors had convincingly won the tie 4-1

The Hunters still top the table with Ahmedabad at 12 points and will know that this was just an off day, fully confident that they can turn around things in Pune.
